    About Big Sonic Heaven...

This would be the right group of people to ask then...whatever happened to Big Sonic Heaven?  I've wondered for so long and when I finally to the time to find out too much time had passed and I couldn't find much info.  I've been so curious and would love it if someone filled me in.  Did Darren Revell (sp?) move? get fired? die? start this station?

Does Sugar Hiccup happen anymore?  The few times I've looked in the Metro Times I haven't seen it but then again Wednesday nigths were never good for me to drive out to R.O. and then try to be up the next morning.

Just curious, can ya tell?  Jen

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

so here's hte scoop jen, from what i can recall...

BSH ended when Darren left 96.3. I don't know all of the details, but i think he had some personal issues and he just wanted/needed to get out of the biz for a while.

Just this last year, he resurrected Big Sonic Heaven night at a couple of different bars in the metro detroit area, but each of those bar nights didn't last very long. I think the problem is that too much time has past, and the youth of today just isn't familiar with that genre.  As far as i know, he isn't currently spinning any more.  And no...darren has no affiliation with this station, although we did give him an open invitation to do a big sonic heaven show on our air-waves whenever he wants.

Sugar Hiccup was recently resurrected by Quig and Melissa Emily. It isn't weekly though, they do it about every month at 5th Avenue. They have done two nights so far.

Your best bet for this music these days is of course.....Aural Bliss, or auralgasms radio in general  :)

    hope this helps....

    Jen,

It's not quite BSH, but if you go check out DJ Paul at Luna on Saturday nights...especially early in the night, he likes to slip in some old school BSH flavor.

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

... as a raging adolecsent I was mainly a metalhead/hard rocker ( with the exception of The Cure, Bauhaus and a few others ) .... it wasn't until tuning in to Big Sonic Heaven that I found the music that would shape my adult life. I'd love to meet Mr. Revell just once so I could tell him just how big an influence he's been on me.

.... but the spirit carries on with auralgasms, bless you, Mikey & Zumby for holding up the torch for good music! ( insert Chariots Of Fire theme music here )

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

It is very refreshing to know that we have this online station to listen to in place of Big sonic Heaven.  I used to listen to BSH every Sunday night until Darren Revell mysteriously disappeared.  Like the previous poster, had it not been for BSH I would have never realized that this genre of music existed.  I'm digging how Auralgasms mixes the Big Sonic Heaven genre with much of the alternative "new-wave" music of the 80s and 90s (and even now).  But I appreciate all types of music (except for country).  Keep up the good work!

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

thanks for the kind words Poprox...my take on Big Sonic Heaven is that it's not really a genre, but more of a vibe...almost spiritual.  As such, there is music from all genres that fit the Big Sonic Heaven vibe.  80s music like Talk Talk fits very well, as do many of the new bands coming out.  The music may change.....but the vibe remains the same :)

i'm glad you enjoy our station. spread the word !!

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

    Hello All,

I still need to make a phone call or send an email to verify this, but my brother lives in LA and called me early this morning (1-25-07) claiming that Big Sonic Heaven is back, now on 103.1 in LA.  He told me a while ago that Darren Revell had turned up on that station, but he is all excited now because he says that Darren has started the show again.

I have not heard this myself, but by bro doesn't make up stories and call me with them at 3:00am.

I will post another reply when I have actually heard this with my own ears (I believe 103.1 has a website that streams their broadcasts), so check back!

    Take care everyone!

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

I can 100% verify this info as Darren sent me his BSH page. He is on a great station and I am elated. Now I just have to convince ethos to pack up the van and head west!

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

How exciting.  Has anyone checked the show out since he started it back up?  Looks like it's on from 10pm-12 T, W & TH.  When did he bring it back?  I went to the 103.1 homepage and BSH isn't even listed as a show yet.  Unless I went to the wrong 103.1....always possible with me.  You can listen online so if anyone does remember to listen please give us a full report!

    Re: About Big Sonic Heaven...

Tis true, the show is back on in L.A.  Check out his latest at www.myspace.com/bigsonicheaven .  I moved to L.A. from Detroit and missed that show BIG TIME!  I found many good songs from the broadcast.  I heard the name in passing a few months ago and it got my hopes up again.  What luck!  Auralgasm is a pretty good substitute, but it's tough to beat the original.  The station is at http://www.indie1031.fm/, to listen live http://www.indie1031.fm/listenlive.php

    Enjoy!
