From the leftovers of the Housemartins came a band that couldn't keep a female singer in the group! From first to most recent release, this a benchmark UK band.

A mainstay! One of the most influential and prolific songsmiths of 90s pop. Starting out as the Housemartins, they chruned the kind of quirkiness that inspired bands such as Barenaked Ladies. After shedding a few members, including future all-star, Fatboy Slim, and picking up a female background, we get The Beautiful South. Their Greatest hits compilation, Carry On Up the Charts remains the fasting selling
record of all-time on the UK charts.

***. To say they are one of Britains best bands is a bag of shite

not too bad, but i'd say the Housemartins' music just had more
    balls, lyrically and musically.

Daveman you are full of shite. TBS has one of the best songwriting teams to come out of the UK since Difford & Tillbrook. Your loss if you don't like them.

A few years ago, a friend from Toronto sent me a disc of his favorite Beautiful South songs. On my first listen I enjoyed the music for what it was, very light and catchy. After a couple listens, I caught myself turning my heading asking "what did they just say???". An unsuspecting listener could easily brush this band off, never realizing how insane some of their lyrics are. This is especially true in songs such as, "Woman In The Wall", "Song For Whoever", & "Perfect 10".

One of the few bands that I will give a 10 to. They have loads and loads of good songs. I saw them a few years ago warming up the Barenaked Ladies and they stole the show. Songs like "Song For Whoever" and "Prettiest Eyes" are amongst their best. I haven't liked their last couple of CD's, but their older work is so incredible that i'm willing to overlook them!! Check out the "0898" CD for some of their best material. Also, check out ThE Housemartins - "Now That's What I Call Quite Good" for some related great material and for a CD with one of the best titles ever!!

The Beautiful South ARE britains best band...
With 9 tope 10 albums under their name and countless singles they really are the best band to come out of britain. I've been a fan for 5 years and I've never heard anything bad come out of The Beautiful South.
Daveman you are an arsehole. as Estrus007 says, "your loss"

the south are definately britains best band and lennon/mcartney?!move over!!im 14 and ive been a fan for about a year and a half and PIR is their best album, 0898 is second. it would appear that the less comercial success a song gets the better the song is, with some exceptions like OLLS and perfect 10 but the river and just checkin are brilliant!!!: )

Pure excellence! Paul Heaton's writing style along with the various melodies make this a band which caters for all tastes. They write from all sides of the story of life. The unpleasantness, loneliness and also the flip-side. The truest band to ever grace the charts!

it's not often that great melodies and clever comedy mix so well. the stories are told with great precision and a poppy sound that is hard not to sing along with.
