New Year 2005 ~ A few favourite things

This season has been a warm one for Allison Crowe despite some characteristically Canadian temperatures and an abundance of snow. Her year, 2004, closed with a series of concerts that united people in music and spirit.

On a professional level, things have, indeed, been joyful and triumphant for the one-of-a-kind performer. Tidings, Allison's holiday tv special was broadcast on CHUM's NewNetwork delighting fans new and old. Capping months of praise, Alley's singer-songwriter album, Secrets, was named one of the best CDs of 2004 by Collected Sounds. Tidings, her holiday collection, was a hit with CBC Radio listeners and received brilliant reviews in publications, literally, coast-to-coast ~ from Victoria's Times Colonist to the Halifax Herald, with plenty of thumbs up in-between and internationally. (Album reviews are found in the Press section of her web-site.) "The Yuletide find of the year," said the Kitchener-Waterloo Record's Robert Reid, "an absolutely stunning seasonal album that can be enjoyed year-round." In the Toronto Sun, one of Canada's largest circulation dailies, holiday albums by Allison and Frank Sinatra were ranked highest by that paper's music doyenne, Jane Stevenson, with Tidings, Alley's single-take, live-in-the-studio, recording topping a sack-full of popular big-budget label releases (from such acts as Chris Isaak, Jessica Simpson, Clay Aiken, Vanessa Williams and the Barenaked Ladies).

And, following the marathon (six-day) radio program of Dr. Gerry Grzyb, (a holiday tradition broadcast on Wisconsin's WRST), "Dr. Christmas" wrote to say: "Of over 100 new Christmas CDs played on my show, Allison's drew the most listener interest." (Chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Christmas, AKA Grzyb, is cited as America's foremost authority on Christmas music ~ with an ear to good music of all genres. Each year since 1989 he's sifted through a mass of new seasonal releases, searching for the gems, outside the mainstream, that make the cut to be played on his radio show.)

Over the holidays, John Intini, Assistant Editor of Canada's national news and culture magazine, Maclean's, interviewed Allison for a fun little item which appears in that publication's current issue. The subject? A few of Alley's favourite things.

Here's an out-take of that interview ~ in which Allison reveals her top classic rock picks:

The Ocean - Led Zeppelin - "I grew up listening to quite a bit of Led Zeppelin, and I love everything to do with The Ocean, that is the ACTUAL ocean, so this track is a natural favourite of mine from the get go. Also, I quite enjoy the a cappella bridge of the song, with all the 'La-La's."

Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin - "Piece of My Heart is a very, very close second, but I had to go with this one because it just rocks. The piano on this track and the rootsy rock feel are my favourite."

The Weight - The Band - "Every time I hear this song I just kind of go 'ahhhh'... and think, wow, I miss Woodstock. Those were the times. And then I remember I was born in 1981."

"All Along the Watchtower - the Jimi Hendrix version would be my next pick" :o)

To learn Allison's trio of most cherished jazz albums, check out the January 17, 2005 edition of Maclean's. (online @ http://www.macleans.ca/culture/music/article.jspcontent=20050117_97731_97731 )

And, here's wishing you the best of New Years. May you and your loved ones enjoy good health and good times. Thanks for listening!

    Tori + Nirvana covers

Allison has been greatly inspired in her life and her career as a singer-songwriter by Tori Amos. In one interview, Alley has referred to Tori as "the goddess incarnate".

In February 2003, The Dent website, (serving the Toriphile community for nine years now @ http://thedent.com ), kindly posted a link to Alley's live performance of the Tori song, Playboy Mommy. Alley's website has been redesigned a few times over since then, but the mp3 link is still alive, and, Alley's covers of other Tori (or Tori-associated) songs are now available @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/crowesongsarchives2.htm

In recent times, Sarah Wheeler, a singer-songwriter from California, USA, created Strange Little Covers as a special home for Tori covers by a whole range of artists. (SLC is moving servers soon, but, for now, it’s @ http://www.strangelittlecovers.tk )

Inspired by Sarah Wheeler's creation of the SLC website, Allison has recorded several of her other Tori faves and these tracks are joined by a lo-fi live recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit - the Nirvana song which Tori herself has performed live many times in tribute to Kurt Cobain and band. These tracks can be enjoyed by “ears with feet” at SLC once Sarah's site has moved servers.

Here's links to the mp3s themselves:

Artist of the Month Flags Big Year Ahead

Collected Sounds, the Minneapolis, U.S.-based guide to women in music, has made Allison Crowe its Featured Artist this month. (http://www.collectedsounds.com ) Collected Sounds profiles such well-known-and-loved acts as Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman and Tanya Donelly, alongside worthy new artists. In spotlighting Allison, Collected Sounds' Producer Amy Lotsberg, (an early champion of such independent artists as Vienna Teng and Regina Spektor), says: "I figured she had some fun things going on and it was high time to call some more attention to her again".

In her review of Allison's latest CD, Lotsberg notes: "I've been an admirer and supporter of Allison Crowe since I reviewed her first EP, '6 Songs' in October of 2002. I was stunned then, as I am now. This incredible chill-inducing voice coming out of a young person is such a rare treat... This girl's the real deal."

And, there ARE plenty of fun things going on with Allison Crowe this year ~ recording and live performances that further demonstrate her supreme, and singular, artistry. This past weekend, Allison wrapped shooting of a live-in-the-studio concert to be released on DVD later this year. "Whether I'm Wrong", Crowe's potent song featured by the UNESCO-endorsed New Songs for Peace project, ( http://www.newsongsforpeace.org/spotlight-200403.html ), will be a single release to international television. Producer/Director Alex Postowoi, whose camera-work is primarily seen in a host of major motion pictures and television shows, has previously shot music videos for Bif Naked, Jann Arden and Joan Armatrading. The songs were recorded at Turtle Studios in White Rock, B.C. by Producer/Engineer Larry Anschell (K-os, Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan).

Next month, Crowe returns to Turtle studios to complete her Midnight Syren album. While these audio and video projects are in the works, some other audio and video tracks, acknowledging Allison's inspirations, have been newly posted online: including covers of some favourite Tori Amos songs and archival footage of Allison's 2001 performance at the World Wide Jammer Convergence in Seattle, Wa. ~ a gathering of Pearl Jam fans (AKA Jammers) from over 30 U.S. states, Canada and other PJ-friendly locales. This music can be found in "Studio B" @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music2.html (Studio B is home to Allison Crowe's rare and live recordings. Her released tracks are now in Studio A @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music.html )

And, launching her live concert calendar this Spring, Allison Crowe will perform two nights in Victoria, B.C. - this Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m. These concerts, at Wood Hall, in the Victoria Conservatory of Music, are to help raise awareness and funds for that city's Girls' Alternative Program (GAP/Options). Full details on the concerts and the cause is online @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/tour.html North American and European tour dates are also planned for 2005.

    Many thanks for listening!

"the antithesis of everything that's out there"

She’s earned standing ovations, literally, coast-to-coast for peerless performances across her home and native land. Now, singer-songwriter Allison Crowe is readying for her first concerts in Europe ~ on soil in which is bedded her ancestral roots.

On her just-completed, third, national headlining tour of Canada, Crowe delighted audiences in the provinces of British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland. This “Sea of a Million Faces” tour swing was capped with a visit to Cape Spear, the eastern-most point on the North American continent. And Crowe became an honorary Newfoundlander at a “Screech-in” ceremony presided over by the honourable Angus McAlpine of Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Next month, Crowe, one of the truly great and original voices of this or any generation, makes her European debut at the historic Bewley’s Café Theatre, Dublin and at Bush Hall, London. (One of the UK’s top concert venues, Bush Hall as well as hosting REM, Coldplay, and others, is where Alanis Morissette returned to live performing in ’04).

Last year, the London-based music journal Record of the Day, declared: “Allison Crowe has a voice to fall in love with.” And, last month, the UK’s premiere roots and country magazine, Maverick, labeled her “a force to be reckoned with”. Along with the nods to her own songs, fan clubs of The Beatles and Rolling Stones, along with caretakers of the legacies of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen have all recognized Crowe’s remarkable interpretive powers. Crowe’s "Tidings" CD has been cited by BBC Radio listeners as among their picks for the "best cover album of all time".

Along with live performances, there is a “Tidings” video album in the works. “The antithesis of everything that’s out there” is how this musical project is described by director/producer Alex Postowoi (lensman behind videos of Joan Armatrading, Jann Arden, Bif Naked+). As with Allison Crowe’s audio releases, there is no trickery or fakery involved. Simply, it’s pure and honest in capturing a dozen songs performed by Crowe live at Turtle Recording, the White Rock, B.C. studio of engineer/producer Larry Anschell (k-os, Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan).

By the time Allison Crowe returns to North America for a series of Tidings concerts in eastern Canada, the U.S. and B.C., this DVD will be released as a treat for fan club members.

You’ll find dozens of free downloads of the music from Allison’s commercially released CDs @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music.html and there are rarities and bootlegs (including movie files) @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music2.html

Best wishes of the season, to all!

    Allison Crowe

Enjoying a rare few days at home for this holiday break, it’s an opportune moment to to update listeners as to happenings with the Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe. (And, in some instances, introduce folks to her...)

Two albums, Secrets (an original singer-songwriter collection) and Tidings (covers of traditional carols and non-traditional songs of joy and peace) have been released by Allison this past year on her own label, distributed in Canada by Festival (the country’s premiere purveyor of jazz, blues, roots, folk and world music). She’s had two one-hour television specials broadcast nationally (in Canada) and has toured coast-to-coast in recent months - with more Canada, U.S., and her first European, concert dates to come in 2005.

I’ve had the honor of serving as manager to Allison for a number of years now, and one of my greatest joys is being able to share her music. The links below are to songs recorded in the past year, all of which are either from live, public, performances, or are live-off-the-floor studio/living room recordings. All of these are first/single take vocal/piano tracks. (You can hear that on a trio of the original songs, those recorded lo-fi by Allison in her living room - on a MOTU 828 and her laptop, she's added backing vocals and instruments to the initial, live, vocal/piano take.):

new songs, new album, new tour

Since last word from Allison Crowe, we’re delighted that her albums have been added to the discerning Ectophiles’ Guide to Good Music ( http://ectoguide.org )

Allison’s newest album, "This Little Bird", will be released this month. U.S. music blog Muruch says: "I can honestly and without hesitation say that it is my favourite album of 2006. :)" ~ noting, "I received an advance copy of Allison Crowe's This Little Bird, and it is the best thing I've heard in a very long time. I'll post a review once I get the final product, but I haven't wanted to listen to and immerse myself in an album so intensely since I first heard Antony & The Johnsons. I think if the music blogiverse has any taste at all, Allison Crowe will be the new artist to be pimped out everywhere.”

Here's a quartet of songs on this new album:

Tickling Glenn Gould's Ivories, Alice Cooper's Fancy and More Fun Flying In Year of the Pig

"One thing is certain, in the future, when Allison Crowe truly gets the recognition she deserves she will be placed in the Canadian mind alongside names like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Sarah McLachlan and Leonard Cohen." That's Toronto's Justin Beach introducing Crowe as this week's "Canadian Music Spotlight" artist at PublicBroadcasting.ca. Beach, an ardent blogger, whose voice was first heard nationally during the CBC lockout of 2005, foresees, also, induction into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for Crowe, and, possibly, an Order of Canada to boot.

And that's how Allison Crowe makes people feel. Joyously free, from her homes in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Nanaimo, BC - bases that cover the full breadth of Canada - Crowe is reaching hundreds of thousands of people with her music. And this embrace is ever-growing by virtue of her natural expression, not due to the "star maker machinery behind the popular song". JoniMitchell.com's Bob Muller, a man in tune with songcraft, proclaims Allison "one of the mightiest talents on the singer-songwriter scene today." Crowe's newest album, This Little Bird, in only limited release at year-end 2006, secured a top ten perch on reviewer's lists from America to Sweden. Slated for full release in 2007, This Little Bird will feature in touring of Canada and U.S., France, Germany, the Czech Republic and other countries in Europe.

Allison Crowe's concert calendar is set include a date in our nation's capital, an Ottawa performance on Glenn Gould's famous Steinway CD318 - before the piano itself travels to join a year-long Gould exhibition. A subsequent gala, in Montreal, will celebrate years of innovation and achievement by one of the country's most independent and successful visionaries in a different medium. Details of these events and all the fun ahead in this, The Year of the Pig, will be posted to Crowe's website.

First though, you can catch up with Allison Crowe in print. She's among new faces joining such veterans as Tom Cochrane, Great Big Sea and Alice Cooper for a feature on "Musicians Who Care" in the March '07 edition of Canadian Musician Magazine. Writer Alec Watson looks at how Cooper, the Artist formerly known as Vincent Furnier, legendary as a pioneer of "shock rock", and other swinging musicians exercise their philanthropic nature. Exploring the theme of "Doing My Part", journalist Helena Green's in-depth interview with Allison appears in the March issue of Synergy Magazine.

    Thanks for listening.  :D

    Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend!

...alongside ReverbNation, linked in my previous email (via their great new widget) - for any who've not already visited, another growing music home, (soon to be out of beta), for artist and fans online is Haystack

As well as finding Allison's profile, @ http://www.haystack.com/allisoncrowe , you'll find music+ from Aimee Mann, Iron and Wine, The Shins and many more indies and non-mainstream artists on this site... from the supremely well-appreciated to the grossly under-appreciated.

Aye, there's lots to explore online in this Year of the Pig!! and on this weekend, sláinte has special resonance in the Irish spirit of celebration ( :

For further fun, there's two new, rare cover, vids - of  song performances from the same concert - now online in Allison's homesite video section:

    TIME AFTER TIME

    http://www.allisoncrowe.com/AllisonCroweTimeAfterTimelivesnow.wmv

Allison Crowe, a child of the '80s, performs one of her favourites
of that era in concert - a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time".

This recording (thanks Scott LJ for the audio!) comes from the same
pre-Christmas '06 concert as does the version of "I Never Loved a
Man". With this song, there is no concert footage available, and,
so, inspired by the example of Cylune, one of the great artistic Web
2.0 vidders, I've made my own, very simple (primitive?!), vid to
accompany the music. Thanks muchly to Steve for capturing the images
of Allison in Canada's Winter time!

I NEVER LOVED A MAN (THE WAY I LOVE YOU)

    http://www.allisoncrowe.com/AllisonCroweINeverLovedaManlive161206

This funkily lo-fi recording is from a concert just before Christmas
2006. Allison Crowe performs "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love
You)" - a song written in the '60s by Ronnie Shannon, and which was
a break-through hit for Aretha Franklin.

Bob Muller, the Grand Poobah of Covers at JoniMitchell.com says: "it
takes a lot of self-confidence to tackle Aretha's version of "I
Never Loved a Man..." but Allison does and nails it just as good as
the Queen of Soul herself. Her piano playing is equally exquisite.
Treat yourself to one of the mightiest talents on the singer-
    songwriter scene today."

Cheers to Del and Scott for capturing this happening. Warmest thanks
to web creator extraordinaire Cylune for enabling this video to be what it is ( :

    May you enjoy!
